Manager Phillip Cocu was visibly upset that his Derby County side could not came away from Ashton Gate without a point following the 3-2 defeat against Bristol City.
The Rams were seemingly in control of the game until Nahki Wells opened the scoring for Bristol City 10 minutes before half time. Filip Benkovic doubled the Robins’ lead minutes later as the Rams went into the half time break two goals behind.
Famara Diedhiou added a third for the hosts before the Rams rallied and threated a comeback. Martyn Waghorn netted his 11th goal of the season with a header whilst Chris Martin scored from a Tom Lawrence cross to make it an nail-biting ending to the game.
Derby threw everything forward in a bid to get at least a point but they couldn’t find it and fell to only their second defeat in 12 games.
Cocu, who was speaking to RamsTV following the game, was frustrated to lose a match he felt they deserved much more from.
“It was a huge disappointment for us that at half time we looked at each other and we were 2-0 behind,” he said.
“We played 30 minutes of fantastic football in the first half and then [we concede from] a cross, a second ball and a set piece and it’s an important part of the game.
“We have to step up and we improve again and to lose here with two set pieces and a goal from a cross is unacceptable.
“We conceded three goals against Luton, two against Swansea and three here, in our last three away games, and that is too much. We have to improve very fast in this part of the game.
“We also have to continue playing the football that we do because I told the lads after the game that we were much better than Bristol City on their own pitch.
“We scored good goals to come back from 3-0 down so it shows good mentality but it’s a big disappointment we didn’t get at least a point here.”
After the Rams’ first win on the road since August was sealed on Saturday following a 3-2 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, Cocu was frustrated that his side could not capitalise on that - but could not fault the football his side played.
He said: “It’s disappointment that we have at the moment and the fans feel it also. We are really close to get another result in an away game.
“I believe that if you play football in this way then you are close to getting your results. Set pieces are a very important part of football and if you look at our season it hurts us a lot.
“We felt in the last part of the game that we were close. Jayden Bogle ran into Martyn Waghorn and we were close to getting the equaliser. We scored late equalisers in other games but we couldn’t do it tonight
“I’m upset at the moment because we didn’t deserve to lose this game.”
