Goddard In Action For Derby County Against Chelsea In 1989
Pictured here is former Derby County striker Paul Goddard in action for the Rams against Chelsea at the Baseball Ground in October 1989.
Goddard joined Derby from Newcastle United in the summer of 1988 and spent around 18 months with the club before leaving to join Millwall in a surprise transfer in December 1989.
The frontman netted the only goal of the game on his debut, in a 1-0 home victory against Middlesbrough in August 1988, and went on to score seven times in 31 league appearances in the 1988/89 campaign.
Derby finished the season in fifth place in Division One with Dean Saunders and Goddard forming an exciting strike partnership.
Goddard impressively netted nine times in the first half of the 1989/90 season, including a goal in a 2-0 home win over Manchester United in August as Derby claimed their first win of the season, but he departed to Millwall for £800,000 towards the end of the calendar year.
Goddard, who scored for England on his only international appearance against Iceland in 1982, left Derby with 18 goals to his name from 63 appearances.
