Flynn Fires Derby To Their First-Ever Premiership Win At Blackburn

Pictured here is former Derby County midfielder Sean Flynn celebrating his match-winning strike with his team-mates at Blackburn Rovers in September 1996.

Derby were 2-1 victors on the night with Flynn scoring what turned out to be the winner at Ewood Park.

Ron Willems had put Jim Smith’s side ahead inside the first minute, but Chris Sutton equalised for the home side to cancel out the Dutchman’s close-range strike.

However, Flynn got the winner in the second half with a composed finish into the top corner from just inside the box after good work by striker Marco Gabbiadini.

After three draws and a single defeat from their opening four matches, the win was Derby’s first in the newly formed Premiership.

Flynn, who had been a key part of Derby’s promotion-winning side from the First Division in the previous season, played 17 times during the 1996/97 campaign as the Rams finished in 12th place.

In total he played 65 times and scored three times across two seasons, after signing from Coventry City as one of Smith’s first signings in the summer of 1995, before joining West Bromwich Albion in August 1997.
